NORWAY'S TROLL PHASE 3 GAS PROJECT COMES ON STREAM
Production has started from the third phase of the giant Troll gas field in the Norwegian North Sea, operator Equinor announced on August 30, estimating that the development would recover up to 347bn m3 of gas.
Troll Phase 3 comprises eight wells at two templates, tied via a new pipeline and umbilical to the Troll A platform, where a new gas processing module has been installed. Equinor hailed the 8bn kroner ($920mn) project as one of the most profitable in its history, with a break-even price of under $10/barrel of oil equivalent.
The phase 3 also emits low CO2 emissions of less than 0.1 kg/boe, Equinor said, due in part to the fact that the Troll A platform is supplied with clean energy from the shore rather than using gas or diesel-burning generators.
Troll Phase 3 is due to extend the working lives of the Troll A platform and the onshore Kollsnes processing plant beyond 2050, and their plateau periods by five to seven years, Equinor said. The project was originally set to start flowing in the second quarter of 2021, but met with delays as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Equinor got clearance from authorities to commission the phase in early July.
Equinor operates Troll with a 30.6% interest, while Petoro has 56%, Shell has 8.1%, TotalEnergies 3.7% and ConocoPhillips 1.6%. The field already supplies around 8% of EU gas consumption.
