Steel is the backbone of modern industry. It is also one of the most carbon-intensive sectors. As countries strengthen their climate targets, Asia’s steel industry has entered a critical phase in low-carbon transition. Yet this process involves more than technological innovation and green investment, it will also have profound implications for employment, workers’ skills, local economies, and the future of traditional industrial regions.

A more holistic approach to the transition is therefore essential. Alongside efforts to decarbonize steel production, policies and institutional arrangements must be put in place to support affected workers, businesses, and communities. Such measures can mitigate social risks and build lasting momentum for decarbonization. China and Southeast Asia—Indonesia in particular—are at different stages of development. Exchanges between the two sides on research findings, policy experience, and practical pathways can offer valuable insights into achieving a green, just, and inclusive transition for the region’s steel industry.

Against this backdrop, World Resources Institute (WRI) China and Indonesia teams will co-host the event “Accelerating Regional Steel Industry Decarbonization: A Holistic Approach to Climate, Environment, and Society through Indonesia-China Collaboration” during Bangkok Climate Action Week (BKKCAW). The session will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (Bangkok Time) on October 9th, 2026. It brings together leaders and representatives from regulating agencies in China and abroad, international organizations, research institutions, industry associations, and other stakeholder groups to explore climate cooperation between Indonesia and China.

Agenda

We warmly welcome partners from across sectors who are interested in regional cooperation and a just transition to join us for this important conversation. Looking forward to seeing you in Bangkok and working together to shape a low carbon, just, and inclusive future for Asia’s steel industry!
