The joke began in October with Mango TV's reality show I Miss You, in which pairs of estranged old friends travel to a plateau to confront old rifts. Attention focused on Xu Fei and Li Na, former roommates and contestants on the 2006 singing competition Super Girls, whose friendship had been severed for years.

During a cliffside conversation, Xu Fei, choking up, said: "I am the one who has been sentenced — where could I go? I trap myself in the past, Li Na."

She was describing being trapped for 15 years by the unresolved friendship.

The segment turns to the classic mythological novel Fengshen Yanyi(The Investiture of the Gods), where Ji Chang, a subsidiary region's ruler, spares a woodcutter named Wu Ji after an accidental injury.

With no prisons in his domain, Ji Chang draws a circle on the ground, plants a stick as a guard, and tells Wu Ji to wait inside for judgment. The circle has no physical power; what keeps him there is the people's trust in and respect for Ji Chang, a test of faith in human nature.

The idiom later came to mean restricting activity to a fixed sphere or, more introspectively, confining oneself within self-imposed limits, trapped by obsession, worry, or preconceived ideas.

Its earliest extant textual citation is in the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24) historian Sima Qian's Letter to Ren An, illustrating the psychological deterrent of punishment.

draw a circle on the ground to serve as a prison

In the classic novel Fengshen Yanyi (The Investiture of the Gods), Ji Chang drew a circle on the ground to serve as a prison, relying entirely on the people's trust rather than physical walls.

①restrict sb to a designated area or sphere

Employees should not be restricted to a designated area of expertise. Cross-disciplinary skills are highly valued today.

②box oneself in

If you keep dwelling on past mistakes, you will just box yourself in and miss out on new opportunities.
