Lao K, an experienced investigative journalist who has conducted numerous undercover operations for China's annual 3.15 Gala, has shared some of the most intense moments from his career — offering a rare glimpse into the dangerous and demanding work behind the undercover footage that exposes rights violations.

The revelations came during the annual 3.15 Gala organized by China Media Group on World Consumer Rights Day, a program that spotlights violations of consumer rights and other problems affecting people's daily lives. This year, the program exposed a series of alleged violations ranging from unsafe food production and fraudulent health products to financial scams and manipulation of artificial intelligence systems.

He recalled one operation with a younger colleague, when he fell off a shared bike while rushing to a location. His leg was pinned beneath the bicycle. As bystanders gathered, his immediate reaction was not pain — but fear of exposure. "In our line of work, the last thing you want is attention. When people started gathering around, my first thought was, 'Oh no, we've been noticed.' That could have compromised the entire investigation."

Reflecting on the challenges of undercover reporting, Lao K said, "Though you work in the shadows, you must always pursue the light."

Lao K first gained public attention during the 2021 "3.15" broadcast, when a video of him went viral for a surprising reason: to expose fraud at a second-hand car trading platform, he went undercover as a salesperson and ended up being promoted to the company's second-in-command.

"Being in a sales role wasn't helpful for the investigation — it didn't give me access to key evidence," Lao K explained. "So I pushed harder, my performance skyrocketed, and before long I went from an ordinary salesperson to the company's number two. I suddenly had over a dozen people reporting to me, calling me 'boss'. Once I had that title, the investigation became smooth sailing."

The show's director, however, grew increasingly anxious — calling Lao K every day to check in, worried he might go completely native. Lao K joked, "If the director hadn't told me there were even better undercover opportunities ahead, I might not have come back."
