IN a reply to an inquiry about the current status of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone at an assembly meeting of Malaysian state Johor on Sept. 14,Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, the state’s caretaker, gave an explicit answer.

The report quoted the state government as emphasizing: “The state is looking at Shenzhen in China as a prime example of the benefits of having a special economic zone. What Shenzhen has achieved proves that the Johor-Singapore SEZ can yield the best results for the state.”

It turns out that this year Shenzhen has been a focal point in the leading English daily of the Southwest Asian country, which has extensively covered various facets of the city, spanning economy, innovation, talent, potential, aviation, and travel.

In a June 16 report, The Star emphasized the city’s “ceaseless innovation and highly competent talents,” citing the success of Mindray Bio-Medical Electronics Co. Ltd., which metamorphosed from a mere agent for imported medical devices into China’s premier medical solutions provider.

When it comes to new energy vehicles, one cannot overlook BYD, as highlighted in a CNN story in July.

Contrary to the predominant focus on Shenzhen as China’s Silicon Valley in most reports, attention has also been drawn to other vibrant sectors. The city’s aviation, art, shipping, livability, as well as its rich cuisine have also made an impact.

A story published in The Star on May 27 mentioned Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport being named the world’s most beautiful airport, saying “Shenzhen’s aviation status appears to be taking off.”

In a thought-provoking report in October, Law.com, a leading U.S.-based media platform, echoed the sentiment of Shenzhen’s unparalleled growth and potential.

“Just this year alone, three international law firms have announced new office launches in Shenzhen ... Shenzhen posted the highest economic growth among top-tier mainland cities in the first quarter of this year,” the report said.

The creative resurgence of Shenzhen artists producing more original art has not gone unnoticed.

In September, CNN released a brief video on Dafen Village, labeling it as “China’s ‘Van Gogh fan oil painting factory.” Claiming Dafen “previously manufactured 60% of the world’s replica oil paintings,” the report offered rare praise, noting “many of its artists are creating their own original work, focusing on China’s booming domestic art market.”

Erika Na, a South China Morning Post reporter, had her own understanding of Shenzhen, seeing features not hastened by “Shenzhen speed.”

She also explored the local culinary scene, writing in August about Shenzhen’s growing international dining options as Michelin-starred chefs have established a presence.

“What I find particularly impressive is the openness of diners to try new things and their considerable knowledge about Western cuisine compared to other cities I have visited.” he said.
