Nowadays, a growing number of young people who value emotional enrichment and prioritize mental well-being are enthusiastically purchasing "emotions" online.

This trend has led to the emergence of a variety of "emotional virtual products" that can be bought for just a few cents or a couple of yuan. It has even become a new side hustle for the younger generation.

A chat support service is thriving in China, catering to people who are so fixated on romance that they have lost the ability to have a rational perspective on their relationships.‍‍

The condition, which has become known as "love brain", has given rise to numerous online shops offering “chatting” companions who will "wake up" a person suffering from it.

According to E-commerce Online news site, some online outlets earn up to 70,000 yuan a month from providing the service.

A woman, surnamed Lu, whose online shop offers the chatting companion service, said the demand for help dealing with "love brain" is surging and accounts for half of her business.

"Most of my customers are aged between 20 and 25, and 98 percent are women," Lu said.

"But I should say they are not yet deeply affected by a serious love brain. They are still aware that they need to rid themselves of the condition. They hope to come out of their love fixation."

According to China Youth Daily, 22-year-old Wang Xiaoyu gained access to his own exclusive "virtual study room" this summer. Here, he can choose to study with hundreds of people of his age or opt for one-on-one study supervision through video calls.

"Do you need gentle reminders or strict ones?" "How's your paper coming along?" "It's time for some reading now." For each small task undertaken, the study supervisor assesses the progress through voice or text messages. If tasks aren't completed due to laziness, sleeping, or gaming, the supervisor will give a "wake-up scolding".

"For those lacking self-discipline, when you're about to slack off, study partners or supervisors will come online promptly. It's like being pulled back on track by someone else, suddenly igniting a burst of motivation," Wang explained.

Feeling emotional? Many young people are opting to purchase "confidential listening" services online. They spend money to have someone chat with them, let off steam, and provide emotional support.

"When I'm emotionally overwhelmed, I really don't want anyone to know the predicament I'm in. Crying alone feels incredibly lonely. So, I thought about spending money to have someone accompany me for a while," said 20-year-old Liu Lin, who has used this service several times. She feels that it's more like a form of self-rescue.

"Faced with difficulties in various aspects like studying, emotions, and life, sometimes I don't want to burden those around me with my negative feelings. Other times, I just want to vent my emotions. My initial intention is to find someone to talk to, someone who would allow me to cry for a while," Liu shared.

Aside from healing-oriented virtual products, there are also virtual products that serve as merely spiritual consolation, and young people are eagerly placing orders to add buffs.

For example, a virtual product titled "Einstein's Brain" became a hot search on Taobao recently. Priced at 0.5 yuan, the product has already been sold more than 30,000 times.

As for what exactly this product is, it seems that many people are buying it just to make themselves feels better before exams.
